Project Overview
A1 Tank Guys completed the removal and soil remediation of a 1,000-gallon underground heating oil tank at a residential property on Gordon Place in Verona, New Jersey, near Mount Prospect Avenue.
The tank was buried beneath the driveway and had previously been abandoned by filling it with foam.
Unfortunately, the tank had leaked, and the surrounding soil required environmental cleanup.
The Challenge
Many homeowners assume that when an underground heating oil tank has been filled with foam or sand, the possibility of contamination has been eliminated.
However, filling a tank in place does not remove heating oil that may have previously escaped into the surrounding soil.
At this property, the previously abandoned tank had leaked, requiring more than a standard tank removal.
Our Solution
Our crew removed the 1,000-gallon underground heating oil tank and performed the necessary soil remediation to address the contamination.
After completing the cleanup work, we backfilled the excavation with stone.
The after photograph shows the completed excavation area with the new stone backfill.
The Result
The previously foam-filled underground oil tank was successfully removed, the contaminated soil was remediated, and the excavation was backfilled with stone.
This project illustrates why a previously abandoned underground heating oil tank should not automatically be assumed to be free from environmental concerns.
