Underground Oil Tank Removal & Soil Remediation in Jersey City, NJ

Removing an underground heating oil tank in Jersey City comes with challenges you don't always encounter in suburban neighborhoods. Between tightly packed homes, concrete sidewalks, limited excavation access, and complicated municipal permitting, these projects require careful planning and experience.

At A1 Tank Guys, we have firsthand experience removing underground oil tanks throughout Jersey City, including challenging projects along busy streets and between closely spaced brownstone buildings. We handle underground oil tank removal, soil investigations, and environmental remediation while helping homeowners navigate the permitting and inspection process.

What Makes Underground Oil Tank Removal in Jersey City Different?

Jersey City's Online Permitting Process

Jersey City uses an online permitting system for construction applications, but submitting everything electronically doesn't necessarily mean quick approvals.

Based on our experience performing underground oil tank removals in Jersey City, homeowners should generally plan for approximately three weeks for municipal permitting and project scheduling. Actual timelines can vary depending on the municipality's workload, application requirements, and the complexity of the project.

At A1 Tank Guys, we work to coordinate the required permits and inspections so homeowners understand the process before excavation begins.

Tight Access and Excavation Challenges

One of the biggest challenges with removing underground heating oil tanks in Jersey City is limited working space.

Unlike suburban properties with large yards and open driveways, many Jersey City homes have narrow walkways, closely spaced staircases, concrete surfaces, and limited access for excavation equipment.

Depending on the property, removing an underground oil tank may involve:

  • Excavating between neighboring brownstone staircases
  • Removing and restoring concrete to access buried tanks
  • Working around underground gas lines and other utilities
  • Using smaller equipment or hand excavation in confined areas
  • Coordinating equipment and material deliveries where parking is limited

We have experience working in these restricted environments and evaluating practical excavation methods based on the conditions of each property.

Traffic Control, Sidewalk Permits, and Pedestrian Safety

Removing an underground oil tank along a busy Jersey City street can involve considerably more coordination than a typical residential excavation.

Some projects require temporary no-parking signs, traffic officers, sidewalk opening permits, or designated pedestrian walkways so people can safely navigate around the work area.

These arrangements must be coordinated based on the location of the tank, equipment access, and whether work affects the public sidewalk or roadway.

Our Grove Street tank removal is a real example of a project that required traffic officers, temporary parking restrictions, and special planning because of its location.

Underground Oil Tanks Near Property Lines

Another concern in Jersey City is how close neighboring properties can be to one another.

On certain properties, underground heating oil tanks may be buried close to property boundaries, sometimes with neighboring tanks located only a short distance away.

When an underground tank leaks, contaminated soil or groundwater can potentially extend beyond the property where the tank was originally installed. This can create additional complications when determining the extent of contamination and the work required under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations.

A1 Tank Guys understands the importance of evaluating these conditions when performing tank removals and environmental investigations in densely developed neighborhoods.

Top 5 Reasons

Why Is A1 Different?

Most oil tank contractors give you a starting price and a very different invoice at the end. Here is how we work instead.

#1

Flat-Rate Pricing

Most residential tank contractors write open-ended contracts: a starting price, then a different invoice once the work is done. We quote oil tank removal, soil testing and soil remediation at one flat rate in writing, so you know your number before you sign.

#2

Real Guarantees

Our flat-rate soil remediation price includes getting your NJDEP No Further Action (NFA) letter. Selling with an active tank? If our soil samples come back clean, an optional six-month guarantee covers the cleanup if the tank later fails the township inspection.

#3

Speed When It Counts

Buying or selling, time is money. We turn lab results around for short inspection windows, can fast-track NJDEP reports, and know the permit offices in many townships well. Our crews are out removing and remediating tanks every day.

#4

Fair Price, Proper Process

Pay at closing for bigger jobs like soil remediation when you are under contract to sell, or spread the cost with financing. Just as important, we follow the right process after the tank comes out. The wrong next step can cost thousands in work you never needed.

#5

Honest Advice

If your tank fails inspection, soil remediation is not the only way to close an NJDEP case. We lay out every option, including sampling that can show no cleanup is needed, so you only pay for what your property actually requires.

Messaged them for a quote on removing an old basement fuel oil tank. They gave us a straightforward quote, showed up on time, cut the tank into manageable pieces, and carried it out through our narrow cellar stairs without leaving a single oil spot or scuff mark 🧼.

Recent Underground Oil Tank Removal Projects in Jersey City

Project 1: 1,000-Gallon Oil Tank Removal on Wegman Parkway

Location
Wegman Parkway, Jersey City, NJ
Tank Size
1,000 Gallons
Primary Challenge
Tank located directly alongside an underground gas line
Permitting and Scheduling
Approximately 3 weeks
On-Site Duration
1 day
Result
Passed municipal inspection

A1 Tank Guys removed a 1,000-gallon underground heating oil tank from the front yard of a residential property on Wegman Parkway in Jersey City.

The biggest challenge was the location of the tank, which was buried directly alongside an existing natural gas line. Our crew needed to excavate carefully to avoid damaging the utility.

We submitted the required municipal permits through the online permitting process. Approval and scheduling took approximately three weeks.

Once approved, our crew completed the excavation, tank cleaning, removal, and municipal inspection in a single day. The tank passed inspection, the excavation was backfilled, and the old tank was properly disposed of.

The homeowner was very happy with the completed project.

Project 2: 550-Gallon Tank Removal Between Brownstones on Grove Street

Location
Grove Street, Jersey City, NJ
Tank Size
550 Gallons
Primary Challenge
Extremely restricted excavation access between brownstone staircases
Special Coordination
Traffic officers, temporary no-parking signs, and municipal permits
Inspection Result
Failed due to corrosion holes and signs of contamination

This was one of those projects where the tight working conditions made planning especially important.

The 550-gallon underground heating oil tank was located between the front staircases of neighboring brownstone buildings along busy Grove Street in Jersey City.

Because of the restricted access and busy street, the project required municipal permits, temporary parking restrictions, and traffic officers.

Unfortunately, when the tank was removed, corrosion holes and signs of minor soil contamination were discovered. The tank failed inspection.

Knowing the difficulty of returning to this location, we arranged for our subsurface evaluator to be on site the same day. Soil samples were collected immediately for laboratory analysis and preparation of the required environmental reporting to the NJDEP.

By coordinating the environmental sampling with the tank removal, we avoided having to make an additional trip to this challenging location just to collect the initial samples.

This project illustrates the importance of working with an experienced tank removal contractor who understands both difficult excavation conditions and the environmental procedures required when a tank leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oil Tank Removal in Jersey City, NJ

Answers to the questions we hear most from Jersey City homeowners, buyers and sellers about buried heating oil tanks.

Where is your Jersey City location?

Our Jersey City location is at 186 Ocean Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07305, phone (973) 447-9221. From here we serve Jersey City and nearby towns including Bayonne, Hoboken, Union City, Weehawken, West New York.

Based on our experience, homeowners should generally anticipate approximately three weeks for the municipal permitting and scheduling process in Jersey City. Applications are submitted through the city's online permitting system, and actual approval times can vary depending on the city's workload and project requirements. Once permits are approved, many standard tank removals can be completed in one day, although more complicated sites may require additional time.

Yes. A1 Tank Guys has experience removing underground heating oil tanks in tight spaces, including between brownstone staircases and near neighboring foundations, sidewalks, and underground utilities. Depending on the property layout, removal may require smaller excavation equipment, hand excavation, or additional site preparation. We evaluate access conditions before determining the most practical approach.

When an underground heating oil tank leaks, contamination does not necessarily stay within property lines. Closely spaced buildings and underground tanks can make environmental investigations more complicated. If a discharge is identified, a qualified environmental professional must evaluate the conditions and determine the investigation or remediation needed under NJDEP regulations. Additional investigation may be necessary if contamination is suspected of extending beyond the property boundary.

Common clues are a fill pipe or vent pipe sticking out of the lawn or beside the foundation, capped copper lines coming through the basement wall, or a house that was heated with oil before a gas conversion. A tank sweep by a home inspector or a quick site visit will confirm it.

State rules do not force every homeowner to remove an unused residential tank, but many insurers, lenders and buyers will not move forward while one is in the ground. Removing it on your schedule is usually cheaper and calmer than doing it under a closing deadline.
